The Sound of Glass

The Sound of Glass
The Sound of Glass
Tomáš Vatrt | June 3, 2021 –

To me, glass represents the past, the present, and the future. It is a material that inspires me and leaves me with a sense of inexhaustible perfection. Glass is my Muse.
How was this unique piece created—one that merges high-end audio technology with the art of glass?
I enjoy working with technology, and I am truly delighted with our latest project where we created functional glass speakers.
How is sound transmitted into the space if I can't see a speaker?
The sound is transmitted into the room through the glass artwork itself. Much like a standard speaker, it vibrates the air, and these vibrations create the sound.
What is the feedback from audio enthusiasts?
This work is exceptional because of how it blends visual art with music. Each speaker system must be paired with a special glass subwoofer to cover the frequency spectrum that glass alone cannot produce. Furthermore, every piece is an original with specific parameters, so each setup is individually calibrated to achieve the best possible result.
What is your relationship with golf? Do you play regularly or attend tournaments (other than those you create trophies for)?
I got into golf through the trophies I designed for various tournaments. I didn't play at first, but my friends eventually dragged me onto the course, and I’m grateful they did. I enjoy being out in nature, walking kilometers, hitting balls, and chatting. During a game, I always meet many interesting new people, some of whom become business partners. However, I don’t play regularly; golf requires a lot of time, and I can’t always find it. You’ll mostly find me at tournaments where I am presenting my work.
Do you have a captain's license?
I do have a license, but I haven't sailed in almost two years. I hope to return to my beloved Greek sea soon. I’ve participated in several regattas and am currently preparing trophies for the Trendaka regatta, so perhaps I’ll get to know that community better.
You are currently taking a pilot's course. Have you always had a desire to fly? What are you looking forward to as a pilot?
My exams are coming up soon, and I can't wait to fly freely whenever conditions are right. This desire had been dormant in me for a very long time. I got into flying thanks to a friend, Marek Feriz (Adriatik Stone—we worked together on various interior projects using his exotic stones and my glass), who took me up a few times in his Bristell aircraft. Thanks to him, I discovered the magic of aerial maneuvers and the freedom of the clouds

My father also used to fly motorized hang gliders, but he tragically passed away.
